G.N. Pannas, the Greek!

G.N. PANNAS
THE GREEK
He died in the mid 1950s. His widow shifted

into her new flat in 1959 where she lived for a
few months till a relative took her to Delhi. Well,
that is what I remember grown ups
saying, that he was Greek! My memory of him is
rather  cloudy  because I was pretty small
when he passed on. Lawrence Terrace was
a long old building that at one time
was used as a stable for the Nawab's

elephants. Later,  used as barracks by British
soldiers. There was accommodation
for 19 families. We, the Shepherds were at No. 13 and
the Pannases probably at No. 6.
In the 1950s, as I recall, Mr Pannas' death
was my first experience, not that I
got a look at the body laid out. But, I
did see the hearse with the long black box
come and go.
Other deaths were Mr Cummings whom I
later learnt was a retired Vice Principal
of La Martiniere College. I think
he died at the Carter's place which
was No 19. No 20 onwards was the Lucknow Club,

formerly, the Residency Club. There was
Mrs Welby. Well that is just three and Mrs
Bowmer whose grave I recently.
posted must have died in between
though I do not remember.
Around 20 years ago Mrs Welby's
great grandson, Dennis W came from Australia.

He was born in Australia decades
after her death. He found us at LT and we tried
finding her grave but failed. Later, her
grandson, Geoffrey, who lived as a little
chap at LT also visited Lucknow.
While I'm photographing graves, I hope
I find this and a few others who I
remember from thise days!

Police sergeant Colin Durward Lambert died 1952

COLIN DURWARD LAMBERT
DIED 1952 at
Lucknow
A police sergeant, Colin, was married
to Maureen, nee Laing(?) who remarried
later and moved to the UK.

Blogger: When I came across this grave
yesterday (July 27,  2015), I got the same
feeling that comes over me when other
familiar names appear, but I couldn't
remember anything about Colin! I was two
years old when he passed on but recall

the name being mentioned at home.
Thanks
to WhatsApp, I messaged an cousin,
Hubert S. in the UK. Since he didn't have the info
he phoned another older cousin, Glenna (Nestor) James who,
provided some details. She recalls that it was her
father, then a policeman himself, who had initially
helped Colin join the police. She also

said that Colin was a frequent
visitor to the Shepherd's residence
at No. 13 LT.

of preserving images of the older graves. That
I have done to the best of my ability. I hope to still
find some of the older stones that I might have
missed and others that have been buried,
reappear, graves or maybe just a headstone
that has been covered with earth.
I have posted some very recent burials,

Raja Sir Maharaj Singh, (Wiki link) son of
Harnam Singh, was Governor
of Bombay state 1948-1952.
Sad these grave are falling apart
Pic taken April 10, 2017
I don not know whether the Raja
provided funds or land for the establishment
of a school in his name, but one is being
run in his name by the Christ Church College,
Lucknow at the Epiphany Church, Lucknow.
No where in the world will one find such
generosity treated with such disdain! The
fact is that the CCC authorities have never
asked themselves: Who was Raja Maharaj Singh?
Where did he die? Was he a Christian?
And, that too in today's world!!!

across this grave, then, on subsequent
visits couldn't find it. Obviously, I had
been looking in the wrong place. I
was familiar with the name because
Mrs Bowmer lived at 17 Lawrence Terrace,
Lucknow and my parents had bought
her dressing table which is still with me.
I checked the FIBIS database for the surname
but only found Boehmer, many Bambers, then
Boomer and Bowmar and some other variants.)

Alexander William Carter 1903-1965

ALEXANDER WILLIAM CARTER
Born April 29th 1903
Died March 10th 1965

It is fortunate that I was able to
contact Ian Carter, settled in Europe from his youth, who provided me with information of his father. Ian writes: He was born at Moradabad April 29th 1903 to Thomas and Helen Carter. Tom Carter, my grandfather was a guard on the railways.
My father, Alec, attended Sherwood College, Naini Tal, then took diplomas in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. His first job was working as an engineer for my maternal grandfather, John Ramble, ran the Standard Electrical Co., located at what later became Faridi Building, near the Mayfair Cinema in Lucknow. He was also a keen gardener and grew, among other things, huge chrysanthemums. He was also a good shot during the duck-shoots on the jheels around Lucknow.
He contracted typhoid three times in his lifetime but otherwise kept excellent health. He was a perfect, though rather reserved, gentleman.
He died peacefully in his sleep at A9 Lawrence Terrace Lucknow.
