Sidney H Shepherd 1917-1988, Olga Shepherd 1928--2013

SIDNEY HERBERT LEONARD SHEPHERD
1917-1988
IN MY FATHER'S HOUSE
I WILL DWELL FOREVER MORE
WIFE OLGA (DIED NOV 27, 2013)
CHILDREN AND GRAND CHILDREN

Sidney retired as Superintendent. Northern Rly, Charbagh Station, Lucknow. Earlier he  was Kanpur Station Master.
I only met Mr Shepherd once in the mid-80's but had spoken to him a few years earlier. I remember it was New Year late morning and he must have been surrounded by his family.
A relative passing through Lucknow with bags and baggage  to be weighed meant a long wait on a cold platform. I recall it was an uncomfortably cold winter that year. Lucknow has two railways - North-Eastern Railway and the Northern Railway so the goods had to come from the NER to the NR for weighing etc. That was a big problem! Since Mr Shepherd was not there I approached the Assistant Station Master and told him my name, deceiving him into thinking I was related to his boss. The ASM was happy to help! He picked up the railway phone and dialled the house and said 'talk to your uncle'. Gosh! I felt like a crook!
So I introduced myself to Mr Shepherd and told him my problem. Without hesitation he said to give the receiver back to the ASM and the job was done. The goods were brought straight to the loading point without any problem.
I never thanked Mr Shepherd - that is one regret among many that I still harbour!

This grave was in better condition when I saw it earlier! There was a Charles Hearn, retired N.E.R. foreman, if I remember correctly and I thought he'd be able to tell me who  W.E. was to him but dementia had set in and the next is he shifted to Patna, Bihar where he died not long after getting there. He is survived by two daughters from his first marriage and his son Errol, from a second relationship. His son John from his first wife who had retired from the Indian Army and settled in Gorakhpur died in a scooter on Nov 1, 1994 long before his father. He was buried in the spot that he saw when he visited the cemetery a day earlier!

He made two trips to the UK, one to see his son, Darryl settled in 1955(?) and again after his wife passed away when he went permanently. However, after a short while he decided it wasn't the place for him. Though he had sold everything before leaving he returned, and was given a room in the house that he had left. He had represented the P&T in soccer having played matches abroad. He visited Lawrence Terrace twice daily for years.

Dolly O'Bediah

Dolly Obediah - Nishatganj Cemetery, Lucknow
I was happy to come across Dolly Obediah's grave while searching for another on All Souls Day (Nov 2, 2013).
Dolly was a nurse who spent her last years at the Crosthwaite Homes, Lucknow.  Nearby graves indicate she must have passed away at the beginning of the 1990's.
After an aunt of mine died end of the '80's, Dolly, who had helped prepare many bodies for burial as a professional nurse and continued to do so long after retirement, wondered who would do the same for her!
According to an article by Barbara Crossette in
The New York Times, dated June 20 1991 there
were nine other women at the Crosthwaite Homes in Lucknow when the writer visited, naming only Elizabeth Young, Annie Clarke
and Marjorie Whitby, former vice principal of
La Martiniere Girls' School besides Dolly O'Bediah. Dolly's age was given as 76. Mrs Young later left the homes to live with her daughter in Kanpur.
Not mentioned in the article was Winnifred Perry who was found dead in her room two years later (in 1993).

Paul could Lavinia Teasdale, the Principal, La Martiniere Girls School, Lucknow for the year 1907-- 1908 have been George Horatio Teasdale's aunt? I thought I wasn't supposed to post the photos of the three graves you sent me yet every time I see them I wonder why you have sent them to me in the first place?
