Benaras Cemetery

Pic taken in 2009 by Susan Elaine Penn-Berkeley
The plaque states: THE OBELISK WAS
ERECTED IN MEMORY OF
GEORGE FREDRICK CHERRY ESQ G.G'S AGENT
CAPTAIN CONWAY
ROBERT GRAHAM ESQ
RICHARD EVANS ESQ
WHO WERE MURDERED BY WAZIR ALI,
JANUARY 14TH 1799

I visited this cemetery 27 years ago and was surprised to
find it had been maintained. These images have shocked me, well actually, only a little, because I've noticed that history doesn't mean much to the majority of people. During my long experience in the newspaper line I came to realize that people don't know much about their country's history or geography, for that matter!

The Illusionist  intrigued me so I searched the net and discovered this picture of
De Villiers and an article. I will be disappointed if my assumption is wrong! It would be interesting to know how his wife happened to be in Lucknow in 1928. Did her husband also come to Lucknow in the course of his work?

Is this the same De Villiers

Francois DeVilliers

Francois DeVilliers
Borncirca 1854
Died1929
Malta
Francois DeVilliers (1854? - 1929), born in Malta to French parents, was an illusionist well known on the lyceum and vaudeville stage in the United States as "The Great Villiers".
He traveled with a French circus as a youth, later going to India as a British soldier. In Spain , he fought under Don Carlos and was captured by Government forces. He was tried as a rebel and condemned to be shot, but British Ambassador intervened on his behalf be caused the sentence to be changed to banishment.
In 1883, he went to the United States and eventually became a citizen and made his home in New York City. There were numerous mentions of his performances in Mahatma. He was also a charter member of the Society of American Magicians.
Soon afterward in 1903, he toured South Africa, Italy and Australia. He eventually settled down to retire in India by 1928.
In 1929, it was reported by Eddie Joseph in the Linking Ring that DeVilliers was found dead in a room filled with coal-gas. He left a letter in which he said he was down and out, having lost a lot of money in bank crash.

There is no indication of the relationship between Isabella Agnes Jackson, born 12th May 1915 died 4th November 1924 and George Jackson, MLC. There was one more Jackson grave nearby!

     IN LOVING MEMORY
                      OF
ADRIAN ANTHONY DANIEL-PALMER
   BORN 4TH JANUARY, 1949
     DIED 3RD APRIL, 1996

I remember Adrian from about 1958 and his father,
Leopold was a friend of my dad's from St Francis' School, Lucknow. Adrian moved from St Francis to La Martiniere and I followed a year or two later in 1962. He was a good sportsman and was particularly good in gymnastics. The Daniel-Palmers, and there were many siblings, were know for their good natures so Adrian was no different. Adrian became a teacher having trained at St Thomas', Kiddapore, Calcutta. He first taught at Frank Anthony's School, Calcutta and (I think) next moved to Oman in the Gulf. Adrian's elder sister, Audrey, was married to Carlton Figg.

Smashed graves

Managing a cemetery is good business, at least in Lucknow. Creating scarcity or the fear of no place to bury ones  dead is forcing people reserve plots. Now the interesting part is what record is kept of the reservation, besides the plot being marked. There's always a tussle for control of the burial board with the new incumbents left with little or no money to function...
Why can't they do this same job in a better manner. Many years ago I visited a 19th Century cemetery located within the Varanasi Cantonment. and found that there were many graves that had succumbed to the vagaries of time, not vandals or the heavy hand of the burial board and the name plaques had been preserved in the boundary wall. Not so here! It can be done here if someone responsible offers some advice. The graves disappearing disturbs the minority Anglo-Indian community more than anyone else. By minority I mean as opposed to the Indian Christian community because many of them are fresh converts who don't have ancestors buried here. What compounds the problem is the fact that it is this section of Christians who control the burial board. A Catholic priest might also be included but usually stays away from the daily running of the cemeteries.

Margaret Mary Collette Daniell

Known to most people as
Molly, Margaret Daniell, was the widow of
Lt Col HRH Daniell,
former principal of
La Martiniere College,
Lucknow. Col Daniell had died in Pune but his ashes were interred in the
Bandariabagh Cemetery,
Lucknow. The Col was the founder-principal of the Lucknow Saink School before joining LMC in 1964.

Ronnie Mendonca

As the old graves are being broken up there is a rush on to reserve a place. Scarcity is what stampedes people to buy which increases the scarcity pushing up prices. The burial board has always been run by people out to fleece the grieving and the dead!
