A dog's burrow

The graves here are from the 1920-30's and I noticed the ground seems to have sunk at several locations. One sees in the pic a burrow made by a bitch for her three pups. The trees growing among the graves in the cemetery  produce a timber that is good for furniture. As the trees grow their roots will spread and destroy the graves making room for more burials while the wood will be 'income' for some people on the burial board.

Edward and Uma Speake

Edward Speake was better known by his home name, Guddu. I (George Shepherd) got to know him when I became a tenant of his parents. Guddu's wife was Uma and they had three sons and two daughters. Both his parents died within 24 hours of each other, his dad on December 31, 1987 (?) and mother, January 1, 1988 (?). Guddu was a good soul and though he spoke his mind, he never meant any harm. He was good with his hands - repairing anything - though he was great with clocks, watches and old gramophones. I was a tenant at the house known as Evelyn Lodge, off Station Rd. and spent many of my spare hours during those years watching him work - I learnt a few things from him!

Son Frank retired as Maj-Gen, in the Indian Army. He married Cynthia Teresa after his first wife Allyson (nee de Castro) passed away. Daughter Winnie married Maj Sam Jordan, Noreen married to Jumbo Hanson, Kenneth (Air Vice-Marshal IAF), Betty; married to Hugh Dignum and Phyllis married to Edgar Tuck (not necessarily in that order)

Son-in-law Major Sam Jordan
Died 10-3-1965. Sam was married to Winnie who later married Mr Neslin Perkins, a widower. They later migrated to Australia. They had one son, Robert who also moved to Australia.

Anderson children 1890

The eldest son of J & F Anderson, George Anderson was born Oct 27th 1884
 Died 29th Oct 1890. The two younger sons also died in 1890 with the youngest
less than two years old. (Nishatganj Cemetery, Lucknow)

Clare Phyllis Aitkins 1910-1934

A lover of animals, her grave was decorated with beautifully sculptured animals and had a wedding portrait on the headstone that remained perfectly preserved, maybe, till the mid-1980s - it has all vanished!

(The first wife of  Klyne Aitkins, Clare nee Spencer died when their car collided with a railway engine at a level-crossing in Alambagh, Lucknow not far from their home. Klyne remarried and had two sons, Klyne jr. who lives in Australia while the younger son, Robin Aitkins died (suddenly) at the age of 28, several years before his father. Robin (a close friend of mine) was buried on his father's birthday September 23, 1980. Klyne Sr was a railway engine driver.)

William Sangster 1799-1881

Nishatganj Cemetery, Lucknow.

There are still a few graves that are works of art - the intricate work is amazing - work that I doubt can be replicated today. How long will they survive?

My search of the net for William Sangster threw up many with the surname but none with the India connection till Yahoo came to my aid:
William Sangster has been mentioned in Malcolm Speirs book Lucknow Families of the Raj.

The Hutton family

The Hutton family returned to England from India where they had been for several generations.

The Huttons are descended from a William Hutton.

His son, also named William Hutton, was born in 1834. This William married Eliza Sangster on 21st January 1859 in Lucknow, India.

William and Eliza had a son, Isaac, born on 6th December 1868. Isaac married Julia Isabel Victoria Lange on 7th April 1891 at Cawnpore. Julia was born on 1st September 1874, the daughter of Charles Ernest Augustine Lange and Charlotte Priscilla Noney.

Isaac died at the age of 44 on 21st March 1913 of 'exhaustion from muscular neuralgia". His occupation at the time was 'travelling ticket examiner'. He was buried on 22nd March 1913 at St.Thomas' Church, Dehra Dun, U.P., India.

Isaac (pictured below aged 23) and Julia had a son, Vernon Lovell Oscar Hutton, born on 24th August 1897 at Cawnpore. On 4th April 1936 he married his second wife, Aileen Leonora Huffton at Secunderabad. Vernon died on 26th April 1946 at Chanda Mission Hospital.

Vernon and Aileen were my grandparents.

The Sangster family

My great-great-grandmother was Eliza Sangster. She married William Hutton on 21st January 1859 in Lucknow, India. This was William's second marriage.

He had previously married Louisa Anne Nixon on 16th June 1856, but Louisa died in childbirth on 13th March 1857, at Lucknow. She was aged 17.
It was two years later that William married Eliza who was 15. She was the daughter of William Sangster.

On the same day Eliza's sister, Ellen (who was already a widow at the age of 18), married Jonathan Edward Cearne (who was also a widower).

William and Eliza had a son on 6th December 1868 (baptised on 20th March 1869 at Christ Church, Lucknow). Isaac was my great-grandfather.

I have just come across your photographs of the grave of William Sangster on your blog along with the quotation from my website. Thank you for posting these. Given that the family were in Lucknow at that time there is a strong possibility that it is the grave of my great-great-great grandfather.

I have just ordered a copy of Malcolm Speirs' book "Lucknow families of the Raj" which I understand has some information on the Sangster family. If it contains any further details about William I'll let you know.
